I'm gonna say they took quite a bit of damage and maybe even flew off the vehicle! Next time that happens, go back and finish them off, because they'll have precious Soul Coins that you guys will be hurting for soon.

I'm not the best physicist, but considering momentum = mass x velocity, and the enemy Demon Grinder was reduced by half^3, you can assume the mass is then 1/8 original. Due to the conservation of momentum, the vehicle should have sped up, but since Rayce told the driver to slow, it might have kept its speed initially and then braked dramatically faster than normal. This could also be due to the carry weight also decreasing with the same passengers.
